Hi Zia, could you introduce yourself?
Hey there! I’m Zia, a freelance health copywriter and the founder of Easy Freelance Writing, hailing from the UK. After life threw me some massive curveballs, including an earthquake that demolished my home and tanked my business, I pivoted hard into freelance writing. I’ve built a multiple six-figure freelance health writing business from scratch, and now I help other aspiring writers do the same. I mentor freshly minted freelance writers, run a coaching program called Clients on Command, and provide all the strategies, tactics, and industry insights that people need to break free from soul-sucking jobs and build thriving freelance careers.
What inspired you to become a copywriter?
Honestly? Desperation at first! I was broke as hell after my life collapsed and needed a way to make money on my own terms. I stumbled across freelance writing while desperately searching for work-from-home gigs, and something just clicked. I’d always been involved in writing through my medical work in clinical trials and during my Master’s in Public Health, but copywriting was different. It was creative, persuasive, and had this incredible power to move people to action.
My very first gig was writing a bio for someone in robotics for $15 on Upwork. Once Upwork took their 20%, I had almost nothing left, but it was epic because it was working! I was a real-deal freelance writer. From there, I learned the ropes, honed my craft, and eventually started commanding proper rates. I’ve been doing this for years now, and I’ve expanded from blog writing into emails, sales pages, website copy, white papers, lead magnets, and more. I focus primarily on health and wellness because that’s where my expertise and passion intersect. And now, I hit $10,000 months regularly, which is something I teach my students how to achieve, too.
Who is your ideal client?
I am not mega-niched within health and wellness, so I work with all sorts from supplement companies, medical practices, wellness coaches, fitness brands, and health technology companies to non-profits, pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, health insurance providers, nutrition brands, mental health platforms, and e-commerce sites. It’s a lot, right? But the common thread is that they all genuinely care about helping people improve their health.
I don’t work with companies peddling snake oil or making dodgy claims, as I value my reputation too much for that. I vibe best with businesses that understand quality content is a strategic tool to drive real results, and are willing to invest appropriately. I love working with clients who trust my expertise, as I’ve been in this game long enough to know what works. Clients who are open to my recommendations (rather than micromanaging every detail!) are my faves.
What kinds of projects do you enjoy most?
I absolutely love projects that let me flex my medical knowledge and my writing skills. I still love good old-fashioned blogs, but give me a meaty white paper or a thought leadership piece, and I’m in heaven. Those high-level, research-heavy projects that position a brand as an authority? That’s where I truly shine. Thought leadership pieces can pay $1 to $1.50 per word, and some writers I know charge around $3 per word for highbrow stuff, so it’s fun AND lucrative! I’m also getting more into content strategy and helping brands figure out their overall messaging, not just individual pieces. Additionally, I always include keyword research and content strategy as part of my blog packages, which also allows for upselling.
What are some common misconceptions people have about copywriting?
Oh, where do I start? The biggest one is that anyone can write, so copywriting must be easy. Sure, anyone can string sentences together, but writing copy that does the heavy lifting of persuading and converting is a huge skill. Another misconception is that copywriting is just about being clever or witty. Now, sometimes that’s useful! But more importantly, it’s understanding human psychology, knowing your audience intimately, and crafting messages that resonate and drive action.
And as far as clients go, they sometimes think they can just hand over a brief and get magic back without any input. Great copy requires collaboration. I need to understand your business, your voice, and your goals. It’s not a one-and-done transaction; it’s an ongoing partnership.
How do you structure your fees, and what factors influence the cost of a project?
I don’t charge by the hour because frankly, the faster I write, the less I’d earn, and that’s backwards. Instead, I price per project or offer package deals. I tend not to sell blogs by themselves; instead, I offer bundled deals that work out slightly cheaper for the client, and for me, it means more cash upfront. Always good.
What influences the cost? Scope is huge; a 500-word blog is obviously less than a 2,000-word white paper. Research requirements matter too; if I need to dive deep into clinical studies or interview subject matter experts, that takes time. Deadlines also matter, and rush jobs cost more because they disrupt my schedule. And revisions: I include two revisions, but if a client wants endless tweaks, that’s extra.
I’m transparent about pricing upfront, and I always get 50% down before I start work, with a signed agreement. Any professional client understands this is standard practice.
Besides copywriting, do you provide additional services to your clients?
Yes! For my freelance writing clients, I provide content strategy consulting, in other words, helping brands figure out what they should be creating, when, and for whom. I also offer keyword research and SEO optimization to ensure content ranks well in the search results. If clients need editing or polishing of existing content, I can do that too. I always offer keyword research and content strategy on top of my blog packages, as upselling is key. But the bigger part of my business now is Easy Freelance Writing , where I coach aspiring freelance writers. I help them build profitable freelance writing businesses through my programs, where I provide mentorship, strategies for finding clients, pricing guidance, and all the tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. I’ve helped students land their first clients, book $3,000 monthly retainers, secure beefy projects, and double their income in a matter of months. So, as it says on my LinkedIn banner, “Words that sell. I write them. I teach them!”
